10 Tips for Parents: Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Strategies

The smartest shoppers know that Black Friday and Cyber Monday are the time to get the best deals. For parents, it’s also a key time to shop for everything your children need. With these Black Friday and Cyber Monday shopping strategies, you’ll be ready to score those once-a-year deals that make shopping for the whole family just a little more manageable.

Shop Smarter, Not Harder: Our Top 10 Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Strategies

Save even more time and money this holiday shopping season with these 10 comprehensive shopping strategies. Be sure to zero in on our pro tips that offer you an extra edge while shopping.

1. Make a List

This might seem like a no-brainer, but it’s easy to get pulled into the wonder of the bigger than life bargains and forget exactly what you need to buy for everyone this holiday season.

Go shopping prepared with a list of everyone you need to shop for and their top requests. It will be easier to keep track of what you’ve already bought.

Pro Tip: Use a list-making app to keep everything neatly organized on your devices. Many apps allow you to share your lists with others. This will be helpful to avoid family members accidentally purchasing duplicate items for your children this holiday season.

2. Go Prepared with Research

Many top retailers offer some deals in person on Black Friday, while others are only available online during Cyber Monday. Sometimes stores offer early discounts to email subscribers or mailing list recipients.

Research the stores you plan to visit in person or online ahead of time. This way, you can zero in on the best bargains at the best time.

You also want to research the prices of all the hot items in advance. This way you’ll know if you’re actually getting a deal and not just being sucked in by the advertising.

Pro Tip: Use Google’s Shopping feature to check an item’s prices at multiple stores quickly. You’ll soon know where to find the best prices for all the essentials for your little one.

3. Make a Game Plan

Whether you plan to shop at the stores in-person or conquer your shopping list online, it’s always a good idea to have a plan of attack. You want to snag all the top items you hope to purchase for your child before they sell out.

Plan where you want to shop and when you need to get there to take advantage of the best deals. If you’re shopping in-person and wish to visit multiple stores, plan your route so that you avoid as much holiday shopping traffic as possible.

Pro Tip: When shopping online for deals during Cyber Monday, make sure you’re aware of how long hot ticket items can sit in your virtual cart before you check out.

With the increasing popularity of online shopping, many top retailers will only hold items in your cart for a short time.

4. Bring the Right Stuff with You

In addition to your carefully planned and researched list, there are a few other must-have shopping items.

Many Black Friday shoppers love to carry reusable bags with them as they shop. They use these bags instead of a cart, helping to resist impulse buys. Carts can also be hard to maneuver, and you don’t want anything slowing you down.

Before you head out to shop, you may also want to grab a few discounted gift cards. Shoppers clubs like Costco or Sam’s Club offer great savings on gift cards to popular retailers. You can also find websites that offer discounted gift cards as well.

Pro Tip: What you wear to shop on Black Friday matters. It seems silly, but if you wear red to shop at Target, don’t be surprised when dozens of shoppers ask for your help. Dress comfortably and avoid looking like a store employee.

5. Carefully Consider Who to Shop With

If you have a friend or partner you hope to conquer the holiday shopping with, see if you can divide the shopping tasks in advance. That way, you get everything you need with minimal stress.

Often having a shopping buddy helps keep you focused. They might also be a great sounding board when you need to evaluate a potential purchase.

Another key strategy is to leave your children at home. This is often easier said than done. But it saves you lots of time and energy. It will also be easier to keep those holiday purchases a surprise.

Pro Tip: If possible, shop with a friend who has children around the same age(s) as yours. This way, your lists may look similar, and you can focus on finding the same great deals.

6. Time Your Shopping Carefully

If your goal is to get a few popular items that may sell out, you’ll want to get in line early. Missing out on some sleep will keep you from missing out on the best deals.

However, there is another lesser-known strategy that you may prefer.

Because stores want to keep shoppers lining up all day long, they often offer later shopper deals. Check ads to find out when stores will discount items.

With this strategy, you can sleep in and still score some fantastic bargains.

The same goes for Cyber Monday sales. Start online early at the stores you know will have sales you don’t want to miss. But don’t sleep on the later deals that might be an even better bargain.

Pro Tip: Watch those door-busters. They are designed to draw customers in early. However, often these products are limited to less than 100 items at each store. This means only the earliest shoppers in line can expect to score the deal.

7. Crowdsource to Find the Best Deals

Before you even begin shopping, check out your favorite online parenting groups to see who has spotted the best local deals on hot items.

Even while you’re waiting in line, you can get great tips from other shoppers on where to find the best bargains. Be sure to strike up a conversation while waiting, especially if you spot a fellow parent making similar purchases.

Pro Tip: Many social media groups are specifically devoted to finding the best holiday season shopping deals. Some are even specifically geared toward parents.

If you’re interested in discovering all the best deals but don’t want to do the legwork yourself, these groups might be perfect for you. Do a little search on Facebook to find out more.

8. “Befriend” the Best Stores

Even before Black Friday and Cyber Monday weekend, you can learn everything you want to know via a retailer’s marketing campaigns. In addition to the mailed advertisements and commercials, you can find deals via social media.

During the holidays, retailers promote through social media and offer exclusive deals to their subscribers. Follow any Twitter or Facebook accounts for your favorite retailers. Not only will you receive great deals, but they will often target the advertising to your tastes.

This can cut down on the clutter from other retailers that don’t interest you. Every busy parent knows the importance of time-saving in today’s hectic world.

Pro Tip: Often, these stores offer everything you need to know on their website or via email as well, so sign up to receive alerts now. (You can always unsubscribe later!)

9. Think Outside the Gift Box

Most Black Friday and Cyber Monday shoppers hope to accomplish their holiday shopping. However, you can find great deals on products to use year-round.

Pick up clothing in larger sizes for your fast-growing little one. Grab diapers in the next few sizes up. You may even plan ahead and buy toys or games that will appeal to them later in the year as they grow developmentally.

Think ahead to the future as you do your holiday shopping now, and you may snag some great long-term deals.

Pro Tip: With so many great products for your little one available, it can be overwhelming. Try shopping for products that will grow with your child. Cribs that convert into toddler beds and car seats that transition into booster seats are a great start.

10. Be Prepared to Wait It Out

Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals get the most publicity, but they’re not always the best time to find rock-bottom prices. Not everything advertised as a deal is a steal in reality.

If there’s an item you want to purchase but you’ll willing to wait for the best deals, try shopping closer to Christmas. Often as the holiday season approaches, retailers will offer additional sales to help offload their stock.

Don’t be so dazzled by the advertisement that you forget to check the original prices. You want to know if a discount is a deal or just a scam.

Pro Tip: Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals are more than a weekend. There is a whole holiday season of sales to take advantage of. You won’t find discounts on everything, so don’t get sucked into the whirlwind of retail advertising this holiday season.

Black Friday and Cyber Monday Shopping Strategies You Can Take to the Bank

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are both known for their great deals and high-pressure shopping.

If you plan ahead, you’ll be ready to grab all those must-have deals. If not, you may find yourself spending entirely too much time and money fighting the crowds.

These smart shopping strategies will help you make the most of your shopping experience so that when the holidays arrive, everyone has a smile on their face.

Facts about Chess, ‘The Queen’s Gambit,’ and the Real-life Inspiration

Chess is having a great year after the Netflix series “The Queen’s Gambit” made the subject mesmerizing. It became Netflix’s most-watched scripted limited series in November 2020, with 62 million viewers.

Chess, the two-player strategy board game, has been around in some form since ancient times. Today, thanks in part to the series, it’s more popular than ever. As more people stay at home due to the pandemic, there is also more time to play board games.

Chess Set Sales Are Skyrocketing

According to The Guardian, chess sets are chess clocks like those featured in the Netflix series, are selling like crazy.

“The online retailer eBay said US sales of chess sets have soared by 60% since last year as more people spend time at home. And since the release of The Queen’s Gambit, sales of chess sets and accessories shot up by nearly 215%.

Wooden chess sets are the most popular, and vintage sets are also in demand. Sales of chess clocks and timers have risen 45% since last month and score pads by 300%.”

Amid the COVID-19 lockdown, playing chess is a welcome pastime.

Meanwhile, internet chess sites are also seeing a dramatic spike in players. At Chess.com, they have seen over 24,000 new members since October 2020.

International grandmaster Maurice Ashley says that chess has become a veritable frenzy:

“The frenzy around it is crazy … All of a sudden, it’s an incredible awareness and excitement around the game, and a lot of the same people are now taking up chess and starting to play. So it’s really had a pretty surprising, wonderful, electrifying effect on the fanbase, particularly of non-players.”

Actress Anya Taylor-Joy

A big part of the appeal of The Queen’s Gambit is actress Anya Taylor-Joy.

Anya Taylor-Joy was born in the United States in Miami but was raised to age six in Argentina, speaking Spanish. She is the youngest of six siblings. Then, she learned English at age eight after moving to London. However, she refused to speak English for two years, hoping her family would return to Argentina.

Sarah Doukas, a talent scout who discovered model Kate Moss, spotted Taylor-Joy at age 17 on the street. She was practicing walking in her mother’s heels as she walked her dog beside the English department store Harrod’s.

While walking, she noticed a car following her, and she thought she was about to be kidnapped. Then someone said, “If you stop, you won’t regret it.” Inside was Doukas, who handed her a business card and advised her not to talk to strangers again.

As a successful model and then actress, it’s notable that kids bullied Taylor-Joy in school due to her widely-set eyes, causing her to drop out. From there, she moved to New York to focus on becoming an actress.

See facts about Anya Taylor-Joy from Star Fun Facts:

Thousands Have Played A Chess Bot Named Beth Harmon

By the end of November, over 100,000 players in America played a bot named Beth Harmon on Chess.com. Harmon is the fictional chess genius in The Queen’s Gambit, played by Anya Taylor-Joy.

The actress gave voice to a Gelfling princess name Brea in the canceled Netflix show: the Dark Crystal, Age of Resistance.

See the bot below from ChessNetwork:

Fictional Beth Harmon Based On Real-Life Bobby Fischer

The real-life inspiration for the fictional character of Beth Harmon is an American chess prodigy and Brooklynite, Bobby Fischer.

He has been called one of the greatest chess players in history. Fischer is himself subject of the 2015 film, Pawn Sacrifice. In the movie, Tobey Maguire stars as Fischer and focuses on his early years as a chess champion. Later in life, Fischer became a controversial figure, as we’ll see next.

See the trailer for Pawn Sacrifice below:

Bobby Fischer Versus Beth Harmon

As a boy, Fischer started playing at age six and played professionally at age eight. By age 15, he became the world’s youngest international grandmaster. Both Harmon and Fischer become teenage chess prodigies.

During the Cold War in the 1960s, teenage Fischer taught himself, Russian, to learn about his chess rivals. Russia held the world title as home of the world chess masters for 35 years.

In 1972, Fischer went on to take the crown of reigning world champion Boris Spassky in a chess game called “the match of the century.” Thus, he was the first American to win the World Chess Championship since its inception in 1866.

Although Harmon is now inspiring women everywhere to take up chess, Fischer once said he could beat any woman, even if they had “knight odds,” meaning a headstart. Since he isn’t alive today, it’s impossible to know what he would think of The Queen’s Gambit.

In real life, actress Anya Taylor-Joy and Bobby Fischer both dropped out of school to pursue their dreams. For Taylor-Joy, that meant pursuing an acting career in New York. For Fischer, that meant pursuing a chess career in New York.

The Ballad of Bobby Fischer

Due to the popularity of The Queen’s Gambit, there could be a sequel. However, if it takes after Fischer’s life, the storyline could be tragic. According to GQ:

“Fischer died in Iceland in 2008 aged 64 from kidney failure after refusing medical treatment. Some believe he is the greatest chess player in history. Certainly, he is the most enigmatic. During his later years, he was bedeviled with psychological problems. There is a theory that chess drove him mad. Others say it helped keep him sane.”

Nevertheless, Fischer was a pop culture phenomenon and the subject of a song, “The Ballad of Bobby Fischer.”

Winning Against Spassky After 20 Years

Mike Wallace profiled Bobby Fischer, who was then only 29 years old and training for the Cold War showdown against Russian Boris Spassky.

According to History.com, Fischer viewed the match as a political showdown at the time.

“Fischer had already accused the Soviets of rigging the tournament system and didn’t mince words in his feelings about them, saying the match was “really the free world against the lying, cheating, hypocritical Russians … They always suggest that the world’s leaders should fight it out hand to hand. And that is the kind of thing we are doing.”

Indeed, Henry Kissinger, the national security assistant for President Nixon, may have persuaded Fischer to play. “America wants you to go over there to beat the Russians,” he reportedly told Fischer.

The prize was $156,250, then the highest prize for any head-to-head sport except for Boxing, according to Wallace. However, by 1975, Fischer forfeited his title after refusing to play Soviet Anatoly Karpov in Manila.

He would not go after the competition’s governing body failed to meet all his demands. Afterward, he would not play publicly again for 20 years.

The Controversial Rematch and Final Years

Then, in 1992, he challenged Spassky to a rematch, which he won. Unfortunately, the rematch defied UN sanctions on the former Yugoslavia. As a result, Fischer became a fugitive from his native United States and eventually moved to Iceland, where he became a citizen in 2004.

After he died in 2008, Reuters reported that Fischer, who was Jewish, “often made anti-Semitic remarks and said after the September 11 attacks he wanted to see his the United States wiped out.”

Amazingly, his old rival Boris Spassky visited his grave in Iceland, where he bent and dusted away the snow.

“Do you think the spot next to him is available,” he joked to reporters afterward, adding, “We will see what happens.”

Although they may have been rivals, Spassky had apparently come to see Fischer with deep respect after all.

Artists Create HOPE Quilt to Comfort Frontline Workers, Honor Victims of COVID-19

People from across the country have created quilt panels for the HOPE Quilt displayed at the Lincoln Memorial. The quilt that spells out hope was the inspiration of Diane Canney, an artist and winery owner from Purcellville, Virginia.

“It’s a very strange time we’re living in,” said Canney. “So why don’t we show what we’ve all experienced? And I believe the nation has the power, the stamina, and the hope to get past this,” she continued. (see video below)

The artist and her husband invested around $60,000 into the moving display of standing eight-foot letters spelling out “HOPE.” Today, the traveling quilt has been all over Washington D.C. and in nearby Loudoun Country, Virginia.

Over the summer, Canney asked her 95-year-old mother, Phyllis Liedtke, what she wanted for her birthday. In response, her mother asked her to focus on helping others instead.

That’s when Canney remembered the AIDS Memorial Quilt, an enormous memorial created in the 80s to the thousands who died from AIDs. With this as inspiration, Canney began her plans for a HOPE Quilt to honor those who died from COVID-19.

Moreover, the HOPE Quilt honors all the frontline workers who have saved lives and kept America running throughout the pandemic.

“Where would we be without people who are so willing to put their own lives on the line?” Liedtke said.

Honoring Frontline Workers

Speaking with the Washington Post, Canney explained:

“Our frontline health workers are fighting a war against an invisible disease,” Canney said. A quilt “tells the story of this central thing that we’re all affected by. It’s a gift to my mom and to the nation. I wanted to be sure we captured this moment, so we will know what it looked like 30 years from now.”

Liedtke and 15 of her friends from a senior living community in Pompano Beach, Florida, helped with the project, creating 15 panels. Over the years, she’s seen many disease outbreaks, but COVID-19 has been particularly shocking.

“I thought we’d seen it all,” she said. “I lost my grandfather to the flu in 1918. I’ve lived through the Depression, which was grim, and there was the smallpox scare in New York.”

To create the quilt, volunteers work on the sections in separate houses, careful to maintain social distancing.

The HOPE Quilt also called the COVID-19 U.S. Honor Quit, made it to the National Mall, and there was an opening ceremony honoring First Responders. On the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, hundreds of candles lined the way to the quilt at sunset.

“We are essentially fighting a war against an invisible enemy,” Canney said at the evening ceremony. “When you think of our Frontline workers, they are our soldiers.”

Each Square Tells a Unique Story

The subject matter for each square tells a personal story, while others share a recognizable portrait, like Dr. Anthony Fauci or the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Also, visitors to the display can participate, creating their own art to be included.

In one square, an artist painted the portrait of Thomas Ali Fields Jr. The 32-year-old Navy veteran died from the virus in March, leaving behind a 6-year-old son. Field’s father, Thomas Ali Fields Sr. took his mother in a wheelchair to see the HOPE Quilt.

“My mother broke down, and she was crying when she saw that panel with my son’s face on it,” Fields said. “Just to see the love people put forth and to take the time to do that. For me, to have his face on something that people can see for years to come is something really special.”

You can see the display and Thomas Ali Fields Sr. in the video below from COVID19 U.S. Honor Quilt Project. Featured is Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington D.C. Delegate to United States House of Representatives.

Stories of Love and Loss

Another panel honors Isabelle Papadimitriou, 64, a respiratory therapist for 30 years from Texas who died from Covid-19 after one week of mild symptoms. She was just one week from retiring, and her son tried to get her to retire, but she wanted to keep helping people.

“My co-workers need me. My hospital needs me. I’ll be OK,” her daughter, Fiana Tulip, recalled. “She said she was stronger than an ox, and we believed her, because we knew she was strong.”

Another square shows the portrait of Mark Anthony Urquiza, 65, who died from complications from COVID-19. The Tolleson, Arizona resident was committed to the community with a “huge heart and generosity,” recalled his daughter, Kristin Urquiza.

Urquiza held a candlelit vigil outside the Arizona Capitol for her beloved father and led a campaign to raise awareness about the serious threat posed by COVID-19.

Thanks to Diane Canney and everyone who shared their stories to honor the lives of those lost to the pandemic. And thank you to every Frontline worker who has kept America going. Thanks to you, we have hope we’ll emerge into a much better New Year.

Astrophysicist on Likely Outcome if a Time Traveler Tried to Stop COVID-19

Is it possible for a time traveler to change the past? If so, it appears the universe might have some unknown power to rearrange events.

New research from the University of Queensland suggests that it might be impossible to go back in time and change past events. Even if time travel is possible, then a bizarre chain of events could rearrange the timeline. It sounds like the plotline of a science fiction movie but could be real.

Appearing on video for The Hill, National Science Foundation Program Director and Astrophysicist Joe Pesce discussed the new research on Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

Using COVID-19 as an example, he suggests if a time traveler tried to stop patient zero from spreading the virus, then time would correct itself. Thus, they or someone else might become patient zero, and the pandemic would happen anyway.

Using himself as the hypothetical time traveler, Pesce explained:

“I travel back in time. If I stop patient zero from being infected and I stop the pandemic, then that eliminates my motivation for going into the past. And that is the crux of the grandfather paradox.”

“So, what these researchers have found in the mathematics is the events would recalibrate themselves. So maybe I go, and I stop patient zero, but I then become patient zero, and I start the infection.”

“Ultimately, the endpoint is still the same; there’s still going to be a pandemic. But, particular events, maybe the details of the timeline change. And so the mathematics are showing that you really can’t go back and affect an endpoint. The endpoint will always be the same. We may get to it in a different way,” he said.

Notably, it remains unclear what mechanism the universe would use to recalibrate the timeline. Would changing events not in itself be a sort of time travel? In that case, who or what is doing the edits to the timeline? It’s fascinating to think about.

Is a Time Traveler Possible at All?

We know time dilation is possible since scientists experimentally verified it in 1977. But what about time travel? In March 2019, Russian researchers claimed to have developed the first of a primitive time machine at the atomic level.

Nevertheless, Pesce says significant time travel for large, complex objects or human beings is unlikely. At the quantum level, it’s so complex that moving trillions of particles back precisely to where they were at any given point in time would be almost unthinkable, but perhaps not impossible.

On the other hand, scientists don’t know what would happen if someone passed through a black hole, and wormholes remain unverified.

“From a time travel perspective, of course, we don’t know what happens when you fall into the black hole,” said Pesce.

Discussing the Russian research, Pesce talked about why he thinks time travel is unlikely below:

Video from The Hill:

Black Holes and Blasts Inside the Milky Way

Scientists know there is a supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way galaxy. In June 2020, NASA noted that it unleashed an enormous burst of energy 3.5 million years ago after a massive explosion.

As a result, our ancient hominid ancestors may have seen a “ghostly glow” deep in space as the blast lit up the Magellanic Stream like “a Christmas tree.” The Magellanic Stream is a ribbon-like tail of gas orbiting the Milky Way.

Magnetars and Magnetic Fields

In early November 2020, astrophysicists reported evidence of a fast radio burst which traveled to Earth, possibly from a neutron star in our Milky Way galaxy.

A fast radio burst is an emission of powerful radio waves that last for only a few milliseconds. At the same time, scientists also detected X-ray emissions along with the radio burst. It’s the first time such a burst was observed happening along with X-rays, and it may have come from inside our galaxy. However, fast radio bursts outside our galaxy were first discovered in 2007.

According to Dr. Pesce, neutron stars are 10 to 20 kilometers in size, three times the Sun’s mass, and the densest objects known apart from black holes. One teaspoon of a neutron star is about 900 times the mass of the Great Pyramid of Egypt.

When a neutron star rotates rapidly, it can emit pulsars, beams of light known since the late 1960s. Some of these stars have extreme magnetic fields and are dubbed magnetars. These mysterious objects may have the strongest magnetic fields in the universe. It’s known there are at least ten in our galaxy, but there could be hundreds.

Could magnetars bend the fabric of space and create a wormhole? For now, wormholes remain speculative but consistent with the theory of general relativity by Einstein. Thus, these hypothetical “bridges” through space-time are called Einstein-Rosen bridges.

Quotes from 2020’s First-Elected Women and Minorities in the United States

The 2020 elections resulted in many historic first-elected women and minorities rising to positions in the United States government. We’ll look at just a few of the many groundbreaking firsts.

Slowly but surely, America’s diversity is being reflected more in our elected positions –at last!

First-Elected Woman and Woman of Color Vice President

Most notably, Kamala Harris will become the first woman vice president and the first woman of color vice president. Her mother was Indian, and her father is Jamaican. Thus, she’s also the first Black woman, Indian-American woman, and daughter of immigrants to be vice president. In the VP’s role, she will have reached any woman’s highest position in US history, shattering a glass ceiling.

In 2017, Harris became the first South Asian-American senator in US history and the second African-American woman elected to the senate. Before this, she was the first Black female attorney general of California.

Vice President-elect Harris is a powerful and inspirational speaker who connects with people of all walks of life. For one example, here’s what she said during a speech at Spelman College in 2018:

“My mother used to tell me – she would tell my sister – my mother would look at me and she’d say, ‘Kamala, you may be the first to do many things, but make sure you are not the last,'” Harris said. “And that’s why breaking those barriers is worth it. As much as anything else, it is also to create that path for those who will come after us.”

The First ‘Second Gentleman’

Doug Emhoff, Harris’ husband, will become America’s first-elected second gentleman. Also, he’ll be the first Jewish spouse, of any gender, for the presidency or vice presidency. Both Harris and Emhoff are 56 and met on a blind date set up by a friend. Less than a year later, he proposed. Recently, he described seeing Harris for the first time as “love at first sight” on Instagram.

Emhoff has two adult children, Cole and Ella, from a previous marriage, who call Harris “Momala.”

Today, Emhoff is being lauded for shaking up gender stereotypes by NRP. Before the election, he took questions from kids online in an “Ask a Grownup” video series.

One child, 9-year-old Atticus, asked, “What would you do if your wife became vice president?”

Emhoff indicated he would be thrilled and supportive, putting Harris out front before him.

“Well, first, I’d say YAAAYYY!” Emhoff replied. “And then I’m just gonna do what I always do, Atticus, I’m gonna support her. Because it’s really important for men and even young boys to support the strong and wonderful women in their life.”

The First Working Teacher as First Lady

Wife, mother, grandmother, and educator with a doctoral degree, Jill Biden will continue working as a professor after Joe Biden assumes the presidency.

Thus, she’ll be the first FLOTUS in 231 years to keep a paying job while living in the White House and serving as the first lady.

In a CBS interview in August, she was asked if she thought she could do it all as First Lady:

“I would love to. If we get to the White House, I’m going to continue to teach,” she said. “I want people to value teachers and know their contributions and to lift up the profession.”

In an earlier Vogue interview, she indicated that education and military families would be top priorities as they were when she was a second lady.

“The beauty of (being FLOTUS) is that you can define it however you want,” she said. “And that’s what I did as second lady – I defined that role the way I wanted it to be. I would still work on all the same issues. Education would be right up there, and military families. I’d travel all over this country trying to get free community college.”

First-Elected Transgender State Senator

In Delaware, Democrat Sarah McBride won to become the first-elected transgender woman state senator. At the same time, she became the highest-ranking openly transgender official in United States history.

In 2012, she became the first out trans intern in the White House. Then, in 2016, she made history as the first openly transgender person to speak at a major party convention for the Democrats. She continues to serve as a national press secretary for the Human Rights Campaign before becoming a state senator.

In 2018, McBride published a book, “Tomorrow Will Be Different, Love, Loss, and The Fight for Trans Equality,” which featured a foreword by Joe Biden. It discusses what she learned from her late husband, Andy, who passed away from cancer.

When discussing her coming out story, she says she did so on Christmas in 2011. She was 21 and student body president at American University at the time. She had decided to start living her life fully and started coming out to more friends. On her last day as president, she came out publicly, receiving overwhelming positive support.

“The response I got was so overwhelmingly positive that it demonstrated to me that when we tell our stories, when we’re vulnerable publicly, that’s something that can transcend ideology. It can transcend gender, race, religion, geography, and I think it allows people to enter into a story, an experience that they might have a difficult time empathizing with,” said McBride.

First Openly Gay Black Men Elected to State Senate

The 2020 elections saw many LGBTQ Americans elected to state offices for the first time. The LGBTQ Victory Fund indicates 220 LGBTQ candidates won their state races.

In New York, Democratic socialist Jabari Brisport became New York’s first-elected openly gay Black man to rise to the state senate. He ran unopposed and has been hailed as “the next AOC,” referring to re-elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Brisport has served as a public school teacher and is a third-generation Caribbean-American.

“When you are a marginalized person, and you begin fighting for yourself, you begin to see that you want to fight to ensure that no one should feel marginalized that way,” Brisport told The Hill’sDiversity and Inclusion Summit.

Meanwhile, in Florida, another openly gay black man, Democrat Shevrin Jones, also won his bid to serve on the state senate. Jones beat two anti-LGBTQ opponents to win the primary as he and his parents were fighting COVID-19. He previously served in Florida’s House of Representatives for six years.

“Representation matters. Having a seat at the table matters. Showing others that it’s possible is necessary,” Jones Tweeted.

Quotes from Queen Elizabeth Stretching Back 73 Remarkable Years

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip are front and center in 2020. The world’s longest-reigning living monarch is 94, while her husband is 99.

Her Majesty has reigned since she was 25 years old after her father’s death, King George VI. Thus, from February 6, 1952, until today (68 years), she’s lived up to her promise made earlier on her 21st birthday in 1947.

Princess Elizabeth made the promise via radio while on a tour of South Africa with her family. There, she laid out her vision of creating a happier world that would be an influence for good.

“If we all go forward together with an unwavering faith, a high courage, and a quiet heart, we shall be able to make of this ancient commonwealth, which we all love so dearly, an even grander thing – more free, more prosperous, more happy and a more powerful influence for good in the world – than it has been in the greatest days of our forefathers.”

Princess Elizabeth

Thanks to the “the inventions of science,” the Princess could make the “solemn act of dedication with a whole Empire listening.”

Then, she dedicated her life forever to the service of the Commonwealth.

“I declare before you all that my whole life whether it be long or short shall be devoted to your service and the service of our great imperial family to which we all belong,” said then-Princess Elizabeth.

See the moment from British Pathé:

A Royal Wedding Broadcast Worldwide

Just a few months later, in November, the Royal Wedding of Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten was the first of its kind to be broadcast live worldwide. Some two hundred million people listened at home on six continents and seven seas.

On November 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth became the 10th member of the Royal Family to marry at Westminster Abbey. She was 21 years old.

Of note, Princess Elizabeth had to use clothing ration coupons to pay for her elaborate wedding dress. At the time, there were rationing measures after World War II. Hundreds of people sent The Princess their coupons, but they were returned since it would be have been illegal to use them.

Adapting to New Technology at Age 94

Today, Queen Elizabeth is still breaking new ground with the latest technology, taking part in her first public video conference call in June 2020. Princess Anne coached her mother, the Queen, through the call, a relatable moment for many of us today.

Afterward, a royal biographer claimed Her Majesty might never return to duties in person.

“Interesting listening to all your tales and stories. I’m very impressed by what you have achieved already. I’m very glad to have been able to join you today,” the Queen told the volunteers.

On Wearing a Crown

Several years ago, Queen Elizabeth described what it’s like to wear the Imperial State Crown in a BBC television documentary.

She noted that the diamond-encrusted crown was considerably smaller in height than when her father, George VI, wore it before her.

“It was very unwieldy. Fortunately, my father and I have about the same shaped head. But, once you put it on, it stays; it just remains itself. You can’t look down to read the speech; you have to take the speech up because if you did, your neck would break. It would fall off. So, there are some disadvantages to crowns, but otherwise, they’re quite important things,” she said with a big smile.

On Climate Change with Sir David Attenborough

In 2018, The Queen shared a few moments with fellow nonagenarian and conservationist, Sir David Attenborough.

The iconic pair discussed climate change and her own mortality for an important documentary, “The Queen’s Green Planet.” As part of a new initiative, a vast network of forests across the Commonwealth was planted in The Queen’s name. She hoped it could contribute to the battle against climate change.

Like her great-great-grandmother Victoria, Queen Elizabeth has planted many family trees in the gardens at Buckingham Palace.

In 2019, The Queen awarded Attenborough the Chatham House Prize for his role in preserving the environment.

“Sir David, this award recognises your many talents and one can’t help but feel that, for those of us of a certain generation, we can take great pleasure in proving age is no barrier to being a positive influence.

Your ability to communicate the beauty and vulnerability of our natural environment remains unequalled as you – and your team – have engaged and enthused many people, young and old, to appreciate and preserve our world’s oceans. For that we should all be thankful.”

A Funny Moment with Prince Harry and the Obamas

In 2016, Queen Elizabeth created a stir on the Kensington Palace Twitter account.

Barack and Michelle Obama took part in a cheeky moment with the Queen and her grandson, Prince Harry. The funny appearance was to support the Invictus Games for injured service members in Florida that year.

The moment of humor showed another side of her relationship with Harry. Today, she’s still supportive of Harry and Meghan Markle, though they have stepped down from official roles in the royal family.

“Hey, Prince Harry. Remember when you told us to bring it at the Invictus Games?” said Michelle.

“Careful what you wish for,” said Barack.

“Boom,” said a man behind the Obamas dressed in military finery.

“Boom. Really? Please,” said The Queen.

A Controversial Promise to ‘Obey’

When the future Queen made her wedding vows, it set off some controversy. The Princess vowed “to love, to cherish, and to obey” Philip. Thus, many people thought she should make no such promise to anybody as the future monarch.

However, Queen Elizabeth chose to follow the traditional wedding vows as would any other wife. The Netflix series, “The Crown,” featured this pivotal moment.

After a Remarkable 50 Years

Fifty years later, in 1997, the Queen and Prince Philip celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary, and the Queen gave a speech in celebration. Looking back at the incredible changes, she reflected on how events and the “mass-media culture” transformed their lives.

“What a remarkable fifty years they have been: for the world, for the Commonwealth, and for Britain. Think what we would have missed if we had never heard the Beatles or seen Margot Fonteyn dance: never have watched television, used a mobile telephone or surfed the Net (or, to be honest, listened to other people talking about surfing the Net).

We would never have heard someone speak from the Moon: never have watched England win the World Cup or Red Rum three Grand Nationals. We would never have heard that Everest had been scaled, DNA unraveled, the Channel tunnel built, hip replacements become commonplace. Above all, speaking personally, we would never have known the joys of having children and grandchildren.”

The 73rd Wedding Anniversary

This year, 2020, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philp celebrated 73 years of marriage, releasing an official photograph. Sitting together, the royal couple looked at a card created by their great-grandchildren.

The royal couple observed England’s second national lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, staying together at Windsor Castle. We wish them well as we look back on 73 amazing years.

10 No-Brainer Ways to Cut down on Waste with Eco-Friendly Gifts

We’re all trying to do our part to help the environment, which means doing away with unnecessary waste. Even seemingly minute efforts, like giving your loved ones zero-waste and eco-friendly gifts during the holidays, could have an impact on our Earth’s future.

Swapping out single-use items for reusable ones can make a big difference in the amount of plastic going into our landfills — the more people who make the switch, the greater the benefits.

And plastic isn’t the only type of waste we need to worry about. The average person creates paper and food waste each and every day. Much of this could be eliminated, reused, or recycled with minimal effort.

So if you know someone who can’t have a drink without sipping through a straw or uses single-serving coffee pods every morning, here are the best eco-friendly gifts to get them:

10 Everyday Consumables to Replace with Eco-Friendly Gifts (That Are Better Than the Originals)

We produce so much waste without realizing it. Many everyday items have reusable alternatives, yet we still turn to single-use items for our needs.

There are reasons for this. Often, the single-use versions are cheaper and more convenient. At the same time, consumers don’t always realize that reusable products exist.

So next time you’re shopping for the holidays or a special occasion, shine some light on these eco-friendly alternatives with your gift-giving.

1. Straws

Phasing plastic straws out of existence has, at this point, become a meme. Unfortunately, many people opposed to the switch think the only alternative to regular straws is to use soggy paper ones or go without.

Plastic straws are far from a necessity. But why are they so demonized in the first place? After all, they’re tiny when compared to other sources of plastic pollution.

The danger of plastic straws is actually a direct result of being so small. Straws are too small to be processed by most recycling plants — if they make it into the recycling bin at all.

People use straws at an astounding rate. Industry experts estimate the United States alone uses 500 million straws each day.

The Swig Life Telescopic Stainless Steel Straw Set is a collapsible straw that fits inside a tiny carrying case that easily attaches to a keyring or slides into a pocket or bag. The included brush is also collapsible and fits right in the case so that you can clean the straw on-the-go.

The Rain Straw is a recent Kickstarter success story that easily slides apart for cleaning. You don’t need a special brush or sprayer to clean the inside — just wash them with a sponge, towel, or in the dishwasher.

2. Water bottles

Getting in enough water while also steering clear of plastic bottles isn’t easy. It doesn’t help that most reusable water bottles are difficult to carry or stow in a bag when not in use.

Whether you’re shopping for a hiker, a college student, or just someone who can’t be bothered to haul around a giant Hydro Flask everywhere they go, eco-friendly hydration is within reach with a collapsible water bottle.

The Nomader Collapsible Water Bottle is great for anyone trying to cut down on their plastic bottle consumption. It holds up to 22 ounces, and the flexible body folds up tightly for storage. When you’re ready to fill it, the sturdy locking mechanism instantly adds support.

The HYDAWAY Hydration Travel Pack is another great style of a reusable water bottle. This water bottle uses an accordion-inspired design to collapse down. Although it holds an impressive 25 ounces when full, the entire water bottle collapses down to a mere 1.5 inches.

3. Shopping bags

Many countries have banned single-use plastic shopping bags altogether. In the United States, eight states banned their use. In England, large retailers must charge a fee for plastic bags to reduce the number used (and it seems effective).

On top of limiting the amount of waste produced every day, reusable bags are more durable than single-use versions. No more worrying about heavy items ripping straight through!

We all know that plastic is bad for the environment. But plastic shopping bags are also terrible for wildlife. Animals can easily get caught inside and suffocate. Plus, all it takes is a tiny gust of wind to send a plastic bag flying into a wetland, forest, ocean, or prairie.

Whether your giftee lives in an area where single-use bags are banned or not, reusable shopping bags just make sense.

The Houswork Reusable Grocery Bags are large, sturdy, and collapse down for storage in your car or pantry. Each bag features an upright design for easy loading and unloading. The manufacturer also uses recycled materials.

Of course, regular shopping bags aren’t the only plastic bags at the grocery store. The Ecowaare Reusable Produce Bags are a great alternative to single-use bags available from the store. They feature lightweight, see-through mesh and convenient drawstrings.

4. Food storage

Tupperware-style containers are great for storing leftovers or meal-prepping. However, when it comes to reusable food storage, there are far more options than you might realize.

Here are some of the newest reusable storage solutions your giftee is sure to love:

We all know someone who washes and reuses their ziplock bags. The Stasher Reusable Silicone Storage Bags are just the next logical step in cutting down on unnecessary plastic waste (and saving money!).

The Bee’s Wrap Reusable Food Storage Wraps Variety Pack includes seven sheets made of organic cotton and beeswax — no plastic here. You can use these sheets to wrap small food items or cover a bowl. They last for about a year, and you can compost them.

5. Coffee machine pods

Keurig and its competitors revolutionized the world of at-home coffee-brewing with their single-serve pods. Despite their overwhelming convenience, though, these pods add up to a lot of unnecessary waste.

If someone you know is wishing for a Keurig this holiday season, be sure to add one of these to their stocking. The YEOSEN Reusable K-Cup is a metal filter that works with Keurig 1.0 and 2.0 machines.

Is there someone on your shopping list who’s constantly on the go or doesn’t need to make an entire pot of coffee? Skip the Keurig and instead gift them a Bodum Travel Press. It features a built-in French press plunger for brewing coffee right in the mug.

6. Cotton toiletries

Following any skincare routine means using single-use items like q-tips, makeup wipes, and cotton rounds. When you do this every day (or even multiple times per day), it quickly adds up.

Reusable toiletries are becoming more and more popular. In some cases, they’re even gentler and more effective than their single-use counterparts.

If you’re on the hunt for the perfect stocking stuffer for a beauty aficionado in your life, why not help make their routine just a touch greener?

The Green Estate Reusable Makeup Remover Pads are great for removing makeup and applying skincare products like toner. These microfiber pads are extremely durable, easy to wash, and can replace thousands of single-use cotton rounds.

There are plenty of sustainable cotton swabs on the market, but you can do one better with the LastSwab Beauty Reusable Cotton Swab. It eliminates the need for paper or plastic swabs to clean up smudged makeup or achieve the perfect application.

7. Paper towels

Paper towels are yet another household item that is far more wasteful than we realize.

When you put together every household in the United States, the country goes through a whopping 13 billion pounds of paper towels per year.

Other countries prefer more sustainable clean-up methods, such as dish towels and sponges. So paper towels are far from necessary to keep a clean and tidy home.

There are plenty of eco-friendly gifts that will do the trick for those on your holiday list that is caught up in the United States’ obsession with paper towels.

The Natissy Reusable Paper Towels easily roll up to resemble a regular roll of paper towels. They’re made of thick cotton fabric and last up to five years.

If you don’t mind ditching the roll altogether, Swedish Dishcloths are durable and versatile. These cloths combine the best of a paper towel and a sponge. Cleaning them between uses is also super easy — just toss them in the dishwasher or the laundry.

8. Packaged soft drinks

Soda and sparkling water will probably never fall out of favor, at least not within our lifetimes. But drinking one or more bottled drinks a day can really add to the plastic sitting in our landfills.

If you’re looking for a green gift that will wow everyone, get your loved one a SodaStream Sparkling Water Maker.

Despite pushback from competing soda and water companies, SodaStream has been very vocal about cutting down on plastic and saving the planet. According to SodaStream, each of its reusable bottles can prevent up to 2,000 plastic bottles from entering landfills.

The company also has a recycling program for its carbonating cylinders. Rather than throw out their empty canisters, SodaStream owners can exchange them for new ones. SodaStream then refills the empty canisters, so they stay in circulation and out of the trash.

9. Fertilizer

Composting is, without a doubt, the best and most natural way to boost your soil quality. It keeps food waste out of landfills and reduces the need for chemical fertilizer.

Sadly, not everyone has the space for a DIY composting pile. So if you know someone who wants to try composting, here are some eco-friendly gifts to get them started:

The Miracle-Gro Small Composter is a self-contained composting bin that requires very little space. You can use it on a porch, patio, or rooftop. More importantly, it’s hassle-free and great for beginners.

If your giftee needs somewhere to keep kitchen scraps before adding them to the composter, get them something like the Bamboozle Food Composter. While this bin won’t actually compost anything, it offers a convenient and odor-controlled storage solution for the kitchen. That means no more wasted compostables when you don’t have time to take them outside.

10. Toilet paper

Across the globe, we use close to 184 million rolls of toilet paper each year. As you can probably guess by this point, the United States uses the vast majority of this.

Not only does toilet paper consume trees, but it also takes several gallons of water to transform raw tree pulp into the stuff you find on the supermarket shelves.

If there’s someone on your gift-giving list you feel particularly close to (or who has a good sense of humor), why not help them cut down on their toilet paper use while also enjoying a cleaner bathroom experience?

The TUSHY Classic Bidet Toilet Seat Attachment gets rid of the need for toilet paper almost entirely. It’s easy to install on any toilet, so your giftee won’t need to call a plumber.

On average, bidets use just one-eighth of a gallon of water with each use. This bidet also uses zero electricity, so you don’t need to worry about wasting power.

Wrap Your Gifts in Something Green

There’s no shortage of ideas for eco-friendly gifts, even for the pickiest people on your holiday shopping list. So if you want to make a difference this year, opting for eco-conscious gifts is a great place to start.

While you’re at it, ditch the single-use wrapping paper and go for something more environmentally friendly.

If you just can’t part with wrapping paper’s traditional look, try the Wrappily Eco-Friendly Reversible Wrapping Paper. It’s made from recycled newsprint and can be recycled or composted itself.

For the gardeners on your list, wrap your eco-friendly gifts with Triumph Plant Gift Wrap That Grows. This wrapping paper is made of recycled materials and contains wildflower seeds. Just make sure your giftee knows that the wrapping paper is a gift, too!

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with using a reusable gift bag or foregoing wrapping altogether. We all know the gift (and the thought behind it) is what matters.

Gifts for welders shouldn’t be limited to welding gear only. From fashionable attire to useful accessories, there are a variety of gifts to choose from.

Let’s have a look at each one of them below.

1. “Welding: It’s Like Sewing with Fire” T-Shirt by Ann Arbor

If you want to pick a customized gift, you might want to look at this unisex t-shirt by Ann Arbor.

This t-shirt is perfect for casual wear. The soft fabric will give the welding enthusiast a little break from the heavy welding apparel.

The shirt features a witty welder-themed message that is screen-printed so it won’t fade off with washing. Also, the ink used for printing is phthalate-free, which means no harmful chemicals were used in manufacturing.

The unisex fitting works fine for every physique as the fit is a little tapered and tends to be slightly boxy. The high thread-count fabric is extremely light-weight and breezy.

This shirt is pre-shrunk. That said, the fabric tends to shrink a bit after the first wash. So, make sure to pick the size with a little margin for shrinking.

Made from USA-grown cotton, the fabric isn’t only comfortable but also very durable – perfect for rugged use.

2. QeeLink Welding Jacket

The QeeLink jacket is designed for style-conscious welders who want to upgrade their protective gear.

Made from heavy-duty leather, the jacket provides extensive protection against heat, sparks, and flames – all the dangerous things welders are exposed to.

Even the thread used for stitching is high-grade and heat-resistant. There is rivet detailing to add a unique style and provide optimal protection against corrosion.

The four large pockets come in handy for quick access to welding tools.

The jacket comes in all sizes. But there are adjustable hooks in the collar, cuffs, and waist to ensure proper fitting. This feature is also useful for minimizing the body-to-jacket gap and keeping any metal particles from coming in contact with the skin.

Despite the heavy-duty leather, the jacket is lightweight and can be worn for long hours.

3. ThisWear Coffee Mug

The ThisWear coffee mug is a cute gift for welders. It displays a funny welder nutritional facts chart to appreciate the hard work and commitment welders put in their work.

This cup has a capacity of around 11oz and comes only in white. But don’t worry. The ceramic is easily cleanable and it is dishwasher safe. The cup is durable and won’t break easily.

The manufacturer has used premium-quality, lead-free ink for printing to ensure that the design doesn’t fade off with frequent washes. Due to the white background, the print appears to be more prominent and instantly catches the eye.

There’s no one “good” side of the cup to flaunt the imprinted design. Both sides of the cup display the welder nutritional chart.

To minimize the chances of a spill, there’s an easy-to-grip C-shaped handle. The heat-resistant ceramic is microwave-safe and keeps the coffee warm for a long time.

4. Principles and Applications by Larry Jeffus – The Welding Book

Principles and Applications by Larry Jeffus is one of the ultimate gifts for welders who want to excel in their field and master their skills. The book provides extensive knowledge to ace AWS SENSE programs so that the readers can pursue their careers as certified welders.

The book covers everything a welder needs to know to earn certification and progress in their field. From basic welding concepts to advanced topics and complex practices, this book features everything.

There’s information about the latest welding techniques such as metal fabrication and joint design. You’ll also get to read useful tips on how to keep up with changing welding trends.

This book is a step-by-step guide for new welders who want to quickly improve their knowledge and skills. There are textual tutorials with the list of materials and safety gear required to carry out a certain welding task.

5. Lincoln Electric K3034-4 Helmet

This Lincoln safety helmet offers optimal protection for welders as they need to be extra cautious and 100% focused while handling welding tools.

The gear features the latest 4C lens technology to ensure clear vision. The protective glass reduces eye strain and improves control.

The 3350 series particularly focuses on lens clarity and correcting common lens flaws including blurriness and distorted vision due to bad angles.

The 12.5-inch lens is large enough to offer a full view while the color correction features automatically adjust the brightness.

Another key feature of this headgear is its unique design. The helmet contours mimic the curves of a human skull to evenly distribute the weight. That makes the helmet extremely comfortable to wear for long hours.

There’s a grind button to let you conveniently switch from the welding to the grinding mode.

6. RAPICCA Welding Gloves

The RAPICCA gloves feature a heat-resistant Kevlar layer on high-exposure areas such as palms, fingers, wrists, and even at the back. The four-layer gloves offer the highest level of protection against flames, splatters, and heat.

The exterior is made of Kevlar leather while the first inner layer features aluminum foil for air-isolation along with a heat-repellent cotton cloth. The innermost layer is made of a sheer cotton lining for added protection.

The thread used for stitching is temperature-resistant, breathable, and moisture-absorbent. The heat tolerance level for these gloves is up to 932 degrees Fahrenheit, which is extremely high.

These 16-inch gloves protect up to the elbows and the additional 7.5-inch sleeve offers extra protection to cover your forearms.

7. Bluegrass Decals Sticker

If you’re on a budget, you won’t regret buying the Bluegrass Decals sticker for the welder in your life. The sticker bears the message “Weld Life” to which all the welders can relate.

The sticker is easy to apply and doesn’t need any adhesive to stick. The gift receiver can simply peel off the protective layer and carefully place it on any of their favorite surfaces.

All they need to do is press the sticker firmly and remove any air bubbles while sticking.

The sticker is big enough to be spotted from a distance. Made from high-quality vinyl, it can withstand harsh weather without losing its shine or adhesion for up to 7 years.

8. YESWELDER Welding Goggles

The auto-darkening feature of YESWELDER welding goggles makes them one of a kind. Offering premium eye protection, these goggles work for all types of welding techniques including TIG, MIG, and MMA.

Unlike other automated goggles, these are not electrically powered. They come with a solar sensor to detect the luminous levels and adjust the light accordingly.

The sensor used in YESWELDER welding goggles detects even the slightest changes in the brightness level. This feature considerably reduces eye-strain and improves focus.

The lens size is 4.29 by 1.28 inches, which gives a full-field view and offers true color viewing.

Safety helmets also protect the eyes but the size can sometimes be an issue. These compact-sized goggles are almost weightless. Therefore, you can even wear them to weld in smaller spaces.

If that passionate welder already owns a hard hat, these goggles will help them complete their head safety gear collection.

9. Welder Nation Welding Cap

Made from soft cotton, the Welder Nation cap makes a unique gift for welders. Though the material feels lightweight and soft, it’s extremely durable and made for rugged use.

Unlike the regular head safety gear, this cap has a unique 8-pannel design. That means safety with style!

The exterior of the cap features a duck canvas to offer maximum protection against debris or metal particles.

The inside of the cap is lined with soft and breathable cotton to ensure maximum comfort. The material is moisture-absorbent and dries off quickly. Therefore, you can comfortably wear it for long hours.

These caps come in a wide range of sizes and colors to choose from. The 7.5-inch deep crown offers a good fit and maximum comfort.

10. Lincoln Electric Backpack

This Lincoln backpack is perfect for keeping all your welding tools and gear in one place. The travel-friendly backpack is made of ballistic-grade nylon, which means extreme resistance against wear and tear.

Thanks to the military-grade material, the backpack can easily endure up to 50lbs of weight. The exterior has adjustable mesh coverage for storing welding gear such as shields and helmets. You can also remove the netting.

The inside of the bag has a lot of capacity and storage pockets. The main compartment has a zipper and multiple pockets. That means ease of storage and a higher level of organization.

The other compartment is a single unit in which the user can store devices including laptops, chargers, and tablets. There’s protective padding that provides extra cushioning.

Despite the heavy-duty material, the backpack is extremely lightweight and easy to carry around. The shoulder straps come with padding for extra comfort.

11. Welding Tips & Tricks Tig Finger Heat Shield

This pocket-sized Tips and Tricks tig finger shield offers extra protection to the fingers, thus, making an excellent gift for welders.

The tig finger heat shield comes in handy in situations when the welder might burn their fingers even if they’re wearing gloves. The product is especially useful in situations when the welder needs some insulation for their fingers.

That makes it ideal for TIG welding in which the welder needs to perform complex tasks and the risk of hurting their fingers is pretty high.

The tig finger shield also protects the safety gloves from prolonged heat exposure, thus, increasing their lifespan.

Even if the recipient of this gift is a beginner or a hobbyist, the Tips & Tricks tig finger shield will provide that much-needed coverage to the welder.

12. Hobart 770548 Leather Welding Apron

Made from authentic cowhide leather, the Hobart welding apron is a durable, fire-resistant product that serves as a protective shield against flames and sparks.

The highlight of this apron is the split leather that has natural fire-repellent properties and requires no extra layering.

The apron comes in only one standard size. But the back strap is adjustable. That’s why it works for most sizes.

The heavy-duty stitching and robust material make the apron ideal for rugged use. The apron is wide enough to cover most of the upper body and long enough to offer some lower body coverage as well.

So, Which Gifts for Welders Are the Best?

While all of the above-mentioned gifts for welders are worthwhile, choosing the best gift for your loved one depends on whether the receiver is a full-time welder or a hobbyist.

But if we had to make a choice, we’d go for the ThisWear coffee mug. Provoking positive emotions by expressing compliments such as “Serving Size: Awesome Welder!” this little gift is a surefire way to bring a smile to that hard-working welder’s face.

So, what would you choose for that smart welder in your life? Do share your thoughts with us!

The Best Plantar Fasciitis Roller for Controlling Pain

If you suffer from the painful symptoms of foot pain, you may wish to purchase a plantar fasciitis roller.

Nearly 8 out of 10 Americans suffer from foot pain, and those suffering from such symptoms may find themselves suffering from significantly more pain in other parts of their bodies.

Using a plantar fasciitis roller may help reduce the risk of developing severe problems.

Many of us spend a significant amount of time on our feet, and our feet take the brunt of our working lives. Maintaining good foot health is vital to improving our physical and mental state of mind and may help us avoid debilitating pain.

If you suffer from foot pain, then using a plantar fasciitis roller may significantly reduce painful symptoms and improve your quality of life.

What Is a Plantar Fasciitis Roller?

A plantar fasciitis roller is a device, sometimes made from wood or metal that we use to roll our feet over. Many rollers have textured surfaces, and the action of moving the soles of our feet over them provides a deep penetrating massage.

Consequently, the action may provide relief from plantar fasciitis, tendonitis, sore and tired feet, and arthritis.

The Sport Foot Massage Roller from Aduro is an effective plantar fasciitis roller to provide hot or cold acupressure to the feet.

Additionally, the Foot Roller from Tumaz is ergonomically designed to treat plantar fasciitis symptoms, foot arch pain, and myofascial pain syndrome.

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis results from the inflammation of the thick band of tissue at the bottom of your foot and causes severe pain. The tissue runs from the heel to your toes. The tissue is called a fascia.

The condition may result in painful bony growths called heel spurs, and if left unchecked, the problem may prove debilitating.

Plantar fasciitis symptoms

Plantar fasciitis causes severe pain in your foot’s heel, which feels particularly intense first thing in the morning.

The foot fascia supports the muscles and arch of your foot, and when it’s overly stretched, it may tear. The condition causes inflammation and severe pain in your feet.

Am I at risk?

Anyone who spends most of their working lives on their feet may experience symptoms of plantar fasciitis.

However, women remain more susceptible than men, especially if they wear high heeled shoes. Obese people and those aged 40 to 60 years old may also find themselves at risk.

Furthermore, lousy footwear and thin, damaged footwear may not provide adequate support for your feet or foot arches. Plantar fasciitis may result from wearing low quality or damaged footwear.

Treating Plantar Fasciitis

You may wear a night splint to stretch your calf and foot while you sleep to reduce painful symptoms.

However, such treatment may not prove convenient. Additionally, regular rest may take the strain off your feet and lessen the pain.

Using a plantar fasciitis roller simulates physical therapy. Specific exercises may stretch your fascia and strengthen your leg and feet muscles. The rollers provide deep massage therapy for your arch and significantly reduce the painful effects of plantar fasciitis.

Using a plantar fasciitis roller for 5 minutes a day may prevent the condition. Therefore, using the rollers as part of your daily routine may help to keep you healthy.
